We focussed on the design solutions that serve a purpose and facilitate improved student learning. Generally speaking, a school is not only a place to acquire knowledge but also where the ‘secondary socialization’ takes place – it is where children learn to socialize. We designed wooden built-in furniture to promote collaboration, play and rest in an elementary school. Our  aim was to celebrate the diversity of the student body, encourage interaction and different types of learning. This designed space inspires kids to be engaged in multiple ways while enhancing a feeling of belonging and empathy. The designs include pale wooden volumes that serve as activity stations to promote learning. Other built-ins provide seating, cabinetry, desks and nooks. The calm colors and natural wooden materials were used to avoid emotional overload. We  implemented noise control with acoustic treatment such as acoustic wall panels, soundproofing and ceiling baffles. These products absorb the sound and stop it from transmitting back into the room or through a partition into a joining space. . This project gave us the opportunity to explore in-depth what happens when design meets pedagogy and how can we use design as a tool for social change – as a tool for promoting inclusion, and enhancing all children’s well being.
